While excess body fat has been linked to a host of health ailments such as obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, and major problems including stroke and diabetes, proof exists that fat accumulation around the waist is particularly dangerous. The reason being is that this is where the organs are positioned. University of Minnesota researchers concluded that the abdomen, more than the hips, is even more critical. Over a five year period, these scientists studied 42,000 women. They took measurements on the subjects hips and waistlines and weighed them regularly. “A greater than two-fold early death rate was seen in women whose waistline was just 15% greater than their hip measurement,” reports the Journal of the American Medical Association. Proper exercise combined with healthy eating is the key that can unlock the door to a healthier, longer life.
