A few simple fitness tips can help the sedentary get the jump start they need. That’s according to exercise researcher William D. McArdle in “Middle-Age Spread,” a report from the Medical & Health Annual published by Encyclopedia Britannica.
McArdle’s common-sense prescription includes these daily rules for living:
• When you drive to work, park your car a few blocks away and walk the remaining distance.
• If you ride public transportation, get off a few blocks before your destination and walk the rest of the way.
• Make short trips on food by allowing the extra time necessary, rather than driving or riding a bus.
• Instead of watching a favorite television show, substitute an exercise video.
• Rather than hiring helpers, use energy several days a week in housekeeping, gardening, washing, and waxing, walking your dog, and doing other tasks.
• Take time during television commercials to run in place, jump rope, do sit-ups, jog up and down stairs, or do calisthenics.
• Instead of partaking in cocktail hours, replace them with 20 minutes or more of exercise, and exchange coffee breaks for exercise breaks.
