Do you want to lose weight and burn off fat? Are you looking for a little extra edge to achieve your weight loss goals? Using some natural supplements to help your body go into fat burning mode may be just what you are looking for. Here are a couple of options you may be able to include in your daily regimen. Green Tea Research released from Penn State found that green tea extract, in combination with exercise, will burn greater amounts of body fat and reduced overall fat in study mice by 27 percent and 36 percent of belly fat. It also reduced the insulin resistance by 65 percent which will also reduce weight gain and body fat. (1) Red Pepper and Capsaicin Capsaicin is the chemical from which hot peppers get their heat. Foods made with these spicy peppers can burn up to an additional 20 calories per day. However, because they are so hot, it is difficult to eat enough to get the effect. Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found another option in pill form that will increase your metabolic rate by approximately 50 calories per day. (2) Ginger In an initial pilot study [...]

Becoming a vegetarian is easier than you might think. Vegetarian eating is different, but not difficult. It does take commitment, but it isn’t rocket science. People become vegetarians for many reasons. Some folks convert to vegetarianism because of religion, animal rights, and health and wellness reasons. If you are thinking of converting to vegetarianism, you must first define YOUR reason. In that way, you know where to turn for motivation and support when faced with adversity. Becoming a vegetarian means not only avoiding red meat, it includes all beef, poultry, fish, and usually the by-products, such as eggs and dairy. In addition, you’ll be eating raw fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts. Most people make the decision to become a vegetarian because of health and wellness reasons. Hindu and Buddhists, however, are strict vegetarians. Others practice vegetarian eating habits because they are animal activists who abhor the treatment of animals during the slaughter process. Becoming a vegetarian has gained widespread acceptance in the past several years as research is shows a vegetarian diet may reduce ones’s risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Recent research has shown that vegetarians live longer and healthier lives. The American Dietetic Association (ADA) states on their website that vegetarian diets offer a number [...]

Prevent Injury STRETCH! By Glenn Gray, M.D. We’ve all heard it before; stretch before you work out. But how many of us do it? Seriously, how many of us actively perform an effective routine before every workout? I’m not talking about an exaggerated yawn or ten seconds worth of arm swings. I’m talking about a strict, consistent routine of specific stretches aimed at specific high risk muscle groups. Who has got time for all that, right? Granted, pre-workout stretching adds more time to a workout session. However, it is time well-spent, as the benefits reaped far outweigh the risks of not stretching. Stretching your muscles before working out is worth the extra time. Pre-workout stretching can reduce one’s risk of injury, especially when weight training. In fact, proper stretching may even help prevent some injuries caused by heavy weight lifting. It is especially important for those who have used anabolic steroids, as medical studies show steroid use makes muscle tendons less elastic. Steroids have been found to have physiological effects on collagen. Collagen may be thought of as the support beams that give tendons their strength. If these beams are weakened, the tendon is more apt to [...]

Body building is the practice of strength training or resistance training to improve the strength and size of the muscles in your body. People enjoy body building to improve the way that their clothes fit and feel, to improve their calorie burn, to improve they way they look or to enter competitions. And, while looking better, burning more calories and showing off ripped abs might be your biggest goals, there are other benefits to your body and your health to body building. Resistance and strength training improves the strength of not only your muscles but also your bones. By placing stress against the bones you are triggering an environment where the body strengthens the bones. The same is true of people who are overweight. They often do not suffer from osteoporosis because they are triggering stress against the bones with the extra weight they carry. Strength training using weight to accomplish the same goal. Researchers have also found that aerobic exercises can boost your mental and emotional health. Both the improved body image and the aerobic activity itself can improve your self-esteem and confidence. As your body gets leaner and stronger, you’ll lose weight, carry yourself better and have a [...]

Coronary heart disease is a growing problem in a world where fast means better. People are searching for fast food, fast exercise, fast pleasure and fast results. The problem with fast is that it isn’t always the best option. Taking care of your heart and your health is a long-term condition that is effective only if you continue to work at it each day. One factor in your arsenal of heart disease prevention is eating fish. The benefits of eating fish are many, but there appears to be some concern as well. In an article in the Washington Post in October 2006, the writer quotes a study that indicated eating two servings of fish per week would decrease the overall mortality of participants by 17%. The death rate was 36% lower in those people who ate fish twice a week as opposed to those who ate little or no seafood. One of the studies published was from the Journal of the American Medical Association and the other by the Harvard School of Public Health. (1) Another study that was federally funded and released by the Institute of Medicine echoed those same conclusions that the health benefits of eating [...]

The rate of obesity in the United States is at an all-time high. Many Americans are searching for a magic pill to make the process of losing weight simple, easy, and painless. Unfortunately, there is no magic pill. Weight goes ‘on’ the same way it comes off. If you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight. If you eat less calories than you burn, you will (or at least, should) lose weight. (1) While the concept seems simple, the practice is not that simple. In this high stress, fast-paced world in which we live, many of us are less physically active today. Many of us also eat less health due to the convenience of fast foods. Grabbing a double cheeseburger, fries and coke at the local burger joint has taken the place of healthier “ sit down” meals at home. Some folks, in search of that elusive “magic pill” to lose weight resort to laxatives. Taking laxatives for weight loss is neither healthy nor safe. The majority of weight lost comes from fluid. The body needs fluid to remove wastes and toxins (2). Let’s look at what happens in your body when you take laxatives. After the [...]

It’s a common misconception that there must always be a trade-off between flexibility and strength. Actually, the two activities should go hand in hand. Many experts recommend stretching muscles after performing strength exercises, and performing strength exercises for every muscle you stretch. In other words: strengthen what you stretch, and stretch after you strengthen! One of the best times to stretch is right after a strength workout such as weightlifting. Static stretching of fatigued muscles performed immediately following the exercise(s) that caused the fatigue, helps not only to increase flexibility, but also to enhance the promotion of muscular development (muscle growth). Stretching will actually help decrease the level of post-exercise soreness. Here’s why: Condition of Fatigued Muscles: After you have used weights (or other means) to overload and fatigue your muscles, your muscles retain a “pump” and are shortened somewhat. This “shortening” is due mostly to the repetition of intense muscle activity that often takes the muscle through only part of its full range of motion. This “pump” makes the muscle appear bigger. The “pumped” muscle is also full of lactic acid and other by-products from exhaustive exercise. If the muscle is not stretched afterward, it will retain [...]

To Boost Your Metabolism, You Gotta Move. Remember the drill sergeant from Gomer Pyle USMC? In his words: “Move it, Move it, MOVE IT!” It’s Going to Take Some Sweat, Soldier! Yes, it’s true. If you want to boost your metabolism, the very best thing you can do is to start moving your body. Some exercise is good for building muscle and some is good for just plain sweating and giving you a good cardio workout. While aerobic exercises like running, jogging, playing tennis or riding a bike will help you tone your body and maintain your weight, they don’t do a whole lot to increase your muscle mass-which is what you need to do in order to boost your metabolism. Weight training and strength training help build muscle tissue and this is a good thing. Think of your body, again, in terms of an army. Too much fat means too many soldiers are weak and wounded, not able to carry on the fight. Body: “Sir! Our numbers have been depleted! We’re not efficiently fighting the incoming calories, I mean missiles!” Metabolism: “Recruit new soldiers, FRESH soldiers! Put them on the front lines and let them take [...]

Stop dieting. Here’s another reason why it’s counter productive. Typically, when most of use want to drop a few pounds quickly, we simply stop eating as much. After all, less food taken in should mean you’ll lose weight quickly, right? Not necessarily. Our bodies are very efficient at storing food as fat as a defense against starvation. When you cut your calories, and if you do it drastically enough, your body panics. Think of it in terms of an army and its rations. Body: “Danger! Danger! There’s not enough food! We’re starving!” Metabolism: “Cut down on production men, we’re going into survival mode! Slow and steady! Emphasis on the slow!” Body: “Just make sure we have enough fat stores to get through this famine” Metabolism: “Aye Aye Captain!” Orders have been given and voila’, thunder thighs are born. Or Jelly Bellies, saggy arms, double chins, saddle bags and any number of fat stores are created in order to make sure that your body doesn’t starve. Think of it as the general of an army, laying in stores for a very long winter. When your body is in survival mode, it takes fewer calories to sustain itself, to maintain [...]

If you had to determine the one or two factors that play into the success or failure of a person in their personal, professional or financial life, it would have to be a combination of self-esteem, self-image and self perception. Each of these factors plays a significant role in how and what we are able to achieve in life. People who feel they have low self-esteem or low self perception are often able to find help and assistance with a counselor or a life coach. However, there is also another option which may be slightly more cost-effective and which will develop habits and processes that will help you throughout life. That option is emotional freedom technique or EFT. Since Gary Craig perfected emotional freedom techniques in the 1990s, practitioners have been using it to improve an individual’s self-esteem and to help trace through the myriad of beliefs that end up corrupting our self-esteem. Using emotional freedom techniques people try to neutralize the negative thought processes and belief systems that hold us back from our full potential. (1) One of the factors that plays a significant role in how we think about ourselves are the multiple phrases that run through our [...]
